In a crowded field of 49 new laptops, Apple and Lenovo lead the pack. See which models set the pace and why the ThinkPad X9-15p Gen 1 earned Editors' Choice for creators.

Apple's MacBook Pro 16 (2026, M5 Max) took the top spot in this summer's laptop tests, setting a new standard for multimedia notebooks. Its mini-LED display, strong performance, and quiet operation helped it stand out, though the cooling system and battery under heavy use still show the limits of current hardware.

The MacBook Pro 16 runs on Apple's latest M5 Max chip and is officially supported on macOS 27, according to Apple's documentation. The 16-inch M5 Max model is available in Apple's China store, with education pricing starting at RMB 15,999. Apple lists up to 22 hours of video streaming on a single charge, thanks to its 100 Wh battery-the largest allowed in consumer laptops under current EU transport rules.

Lenovo's ThinkPad X9-15p Gen 1 is the strongest Windows competitor this year, earning the Editors' Choice Award for summer 2026. It features a premium aluminum body, Intel Core Ultra X7 358H processor, 32 GB RAM, a 15.3-inch OLED display, and a six-speaker sound system. The X9-15p Gen 1 is built for creators who want both power and a refined design. Its quiet cooling and solid battery life make it a real alternative to the MacBook Pro. Lenovo's Japanese product pages confirm the X9-15p Gen 1 Aura Edition as a 15.3-inch Intel-based model, and the Core Ultra X7 358H now appears in flagship notebooks from Lenovo, VAIO, and LG, including the Gram Pro AI 2026.

The test lab reviewed 49 notebooks in total. HP's EliteBook X Flip G2i 14 AI stood out for its light weight, battery life, and clean design. Asus's ROG Zephyrus G16 GU606AW and G14 GU405AR delivered top gaming performance with brighter OLED screens and new Intel Panther Lake processors. Lenovo's Yoga Pro 7 15IPH11 and ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 also used Panther Lake chips for strong multimedia performance and long battery life, with the X1 Carbon offering Thunderbolt 4 and optional 5G.

  • Apple's MacBook Pro 16 with M5 Max is officially supported on macOS 27, and the 100 Wh battery enables up to 22 hours of video streaming-setting a new standard for endurance in the premium segment.

Other notable models included the HP EliteBook X G2i 14 DL9Y8ET and ThinkPad T14s Gen 7, both strong on portability and battery life. The Framework Laptop 13 Pro was recognized for its modular, repairable design and sturdy build. Microsoft's Surface Laptop 8 13.8, now using the Snapdragon X2 Plus SoC, improved battery life and input quality. Razer's Blade 18 and Blade 16 (2026) continued to push high-end gaming with top GPUs and tuned HDR displays.

For a full breakdown, the complete table of all 49 tested notebooks is available at the end of the original review. Readers interested in earlier results can see a previous review of the spring 2026 models, when the market was already shifting quickly.

This summer's top laptops stand out not just for performance, but for their balance of display quality, battery life, and design. The MacBook Pro 16 remains the reference for multimedia work, but Lenovo's ThinkPad X9-15p Gen 1 shows that Windows machines can now match or even surpass Apple in key areas for demanding users. Strong showings from HP, Asus, Microsoft, and Framework point to a market where innovation and user needs are finally taking priority over raw specs.
