Solidigm's D5-P5430 30.72TB E3.S SSD stands out for small-block write speed and endurance in mixed and read-heavy data centers, going head-to-head with bigger Gen4 and Gen5 QLC drives despite its mainstream label.

Solidigm's D5-P5430 30.72TB E3.S SSD has changed what people expect from mainstream Gen4 QLC storage. It beats even much larger QLC drives in small-block workloads and checkpointing tests. The market is now full of 61TB, 122TB, and even 245TB QLC SSDs, many already on Gen5. But the P5430, with its 8KB indirection unit and slim 7.5mm E3.S form factor, shows that capacity alone is not what matters most for enterprise use.

Tests showed the P5430 can go beyond its own specs. It reached 3,150.2MB/s in 128K sequential write, topping its 3,000MB/s rating and matching the Solidigm P5336 122.88TB for Gen4 QLC performance. Sequential reads hit 7,132.1MB/s, right up there with the best. The biggest surprise came in 4K random operations. The P5430 hit 975.2K IOPS for reads and 152.5K IOPS for writes. That puts it ahead of bigger QLC rivals in the small-block workloads that are common in virtualized and mixed environments.

Solidigm's goal with the P5430 is simple: bring TLC-like read speeds at QLC prices, and keep enterprise reliability. The drive uses 192-layer 3D QLC NAND, Solidigm's own controller and firmware, and supports PCIe 4.0 x4 with NVMe 1.4c. It covers all the basics for data centers: end-to-end data protection (ECC and CRC), power loss protection, secure boot, TCG Opal 2.0 and FIPS 140-2 Level 2 options, OCP 2.0 telemetry, and wide platform support across Intel, AMD, Ampere, and NVIDIA. The 30.72TB model is rated for 934.5K random read IOPS and 31.92PBW endurance. That works out to 0.58 DWPD over five years with a 100 percent random write workload. Power use is up to 25W active and 5W idle.

The D5-P5430 family is positioned as a hyper-dense PCIe 4.0 QLC solution for mainstream, read-intensive workloads, offering capacities from 3.84TB to 30.72TB and optimized for data center efficiency.

SolidigmOfficial Product Positioning

In GPU Direct Storage tests, the P5430 delivered about 90 percent of the throughput of the biggest Gen4 QLC drives on large-block GPU-direct reads. It also kept up with or beat its 3,000MB/s write rating across different thread counts. In DLIO checkpointing, which simulates AI training, the P5430 wrote checkpoints at around 3.1GB/s. That put it third in the group, just behind TLC and some Gen5 drives, and about 10 percent faster than some of the largest QLC competitors.

For those watching enterprise SSD progress, the P5430's numbers bring to mind the KIOXIA CM9-R 15TB E3.S, which set speed records for Gen5. But the P5430's results stand out even more because it is a mainstream Gen4 drive focused on endurance and efficiency, not just headline capacity.

The D5-P5430 line covers 3.84TB to 30.72TB in U.2 15mm and E3.S 7.5mm, with E1.S 9.5mm models up to 15.36TB. The 30.72TB E3.S stands out for its mix of density, power efficiency, and strong small-block performance. It is a solid pick for read-heavy and virtualized setups where steady throughput and reliability matter more than just raw terabytes.

The P5430 does not match the top bandwidth or max capacity of the newest Gen5 QLC giants. But its real-world results in mixed and small-block workloads, plus enterprise endurance and power management, make it a smart, future-ready choice for data centers that care about efficiency over marketing numbers.
